Pusong Township in Nimu County is a famous "hometown of woodblock carving". Prayer flags can be seen everywhere in Xizang, but the scripture plates printing scriptures on prayer flags are basically from one place, Pusong Township, Nimu County. The history of carving sutras in Pusong Township is very long. In addition to printing prayer flags, it is more importantly used for printing sutras in temples. The whole of Xizang, I dare not say 100%, but at least 90% of the scriptures come from Pusong Township, so this land is also called the township of engraving. The carving of sutras in Pusong Township and the production of Tibetan incense in Tunba Township, as well as the handmade paper hiding in Xuela Village, have become the "Three Wonders of Nimu"

The process of Pu Song carving is complex, with ordinary Tibetan Buddhist scriptures requiring 9 processes, Buddha statues generally requiring 15-16 processes, and even complex ones requiring 20-30 processes. The carving knives used are also very particular, and each sculptor has their own set of dedicated carving knives, usually more than 20
The production method of Pu Song carving
Sutra carving is divided into four steps. The first step is the source of the wooden board: the wood carved in Pusong Township is "Chiba wood" bought from Lhasa. It is said that it needs to be cut into blocks according to the texture, smoked dry with fire, soaked in sheep manure, then boiled in water, dried, and planed to make carved boards. It's really not easy! The second step is to apply glue on the wooden board, stick the scripture paper printed on it, punch the side with words inside, and let it dry. The third step is to scrape off the paper. At this point, the ink has already seeped into the wooden board. Use a cutting tool to dig out the parts with more gaps. Apply clean oil, cover with a damp cloth after one to two hours, and let it sit for a day to maintain the moisture level of the cloth. The fourth step is carving: using relief carving method, leaving only raised text or images on the wooden carving plate, and the rest of the wood needs to be excavated, usually to a depth of 1/2 inch to 1/4 inch. The carving knife should be tightly carved along the edge of the text or image. After engraving the scripture, saw off the excess wood at both ends and then cut and sprinkle the parts outside the scripture to create a sloping surface. This way, no excess material will be printed during printing. After going through these complex steps, a template can finally be completed
