Abstract
Xinghai Square covers an area of 1.76 million square meters and is the world's largest urban square, with an area four times that of Tiananmen Square in Beijing. It was built on June 30, 1997. The central square covers an area of 45000 square meters and is a project commemorating the return of Hong Kong. The largest White Marble ornamental column in China in the center of the square is 19.97m high and 1.997m in diameter. Eight dragons are attached to the base of ornamental column, and one dragon is carved on the column. Nine dragons symbolize China's Jiuzhou. At the top of ornamental column, there is a golden looking roar, 2.3 meters high. The White Marble columns around ornamental column are 12.34 meters high, each holding a palace lantern. The center of the square is designed to emulate the circular dome of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, paved with 999 pieces of Sichuan red marble. The marble is engraved with the heavenly stems and earthly branches, 24 solar terms, and 12 zodiac signs. Standing on one's own zodiac sign for photography can bring good luck. The inner diameter of the square is 199.9 meters, and the outer diameter is 239.9 meters, symbolizing that Dalian will celebrate its 500th anniversary as a city in 2399.
