Yunyang District has a long history of Tianma production. Wild Tianma has been growing in the high mountain areas around Canglang Mountain since ancient times. The production of Tianma is recorded in the "Yunyang Prefecture Annals" of the Ming Dynasty and the "Yunxian Annals" of the Kangxi Dynasty.

After the liberation, Leslie Cheung, the deputy general manager of a medicinal herb company, conducted artificial cultivation experiments on wild gastrodia elata and developed techniques for asexual and sexual reproduction in 1972 and 1977, respectively, which were promoted throughout the region. The geographical scope of Yunyang Tianma includes 7 townships (fields) under the jurisdiction of Yunyang District, Shiyan City, Hubei Province, including Baoxia Town, Wufeng Township, Yeda Township, Hongyanbei Forest Farm, Daliu Township, Baisangguan Town, and Nanhuatang Town, with a total of 35 administrative villages and 4150 households. 1. Unique Sensory Features: Yunyang Tianma is a parasitic herbaceous plant in the Orchidaceae family. The entire plant has no roots or green leaves, only aboveground stems and underground tubers. Yunyang Tianma plant is about 1.5 meters tall, with orange red stems and yellow flowers with a slight orange red color. The flowering period is from April to May. The dried tubers of Yunyang Tianma have a flattened and slightly curved appearance, with reddish brown dry buds at the top, commonly known as "parrot's beak", and circular belly button shaped scars at the other end, commonly known as "concave belly button". They are generally 6-14 centimeters long, 2.4-4 centimeters wide, 0.6-2.2 centimeters thick, weighing 30-65 grams, with a surface that is yellow white to yellow brown, slightly transparent, and has horizontal and vertical wrinkles formed by point like protrusions. The texture is hard and not easy to break. The cross-section is relatively flat, ranging from yellow white to light brown, with a keratinous appearance and a slightly bitter taste. 2.
