 & nbsp; It is the most important tourist destination in Mumbai. Located 11 kilometers northeast of India Gate. There are four Hindu temples carved out of rocks on the island, built around 450-750 AD, when the island was known as a "castle city". In the 16th century, the Portuguese discovered an elephant carved from a single stone near the landing site on the island, so the island was named after the Portuguese word "elephant".
 & nbsp; Charapuri, the ancient name of Elephant Island, refers to a place with many caves. From the 6th to the 8th century AD, the Cherujia and Rashtrakuta people of the Deccan region excavated seven caves in the sandstone hills here, among which the most famous is the well preserved first cave, the Temple of Shiva. The so-called Xiangdao Grottoes usually specifically refer to the temple of Shiva Grottoes, which is carved from rocks. There are many large stone carvings inside the cave, depicting various legends about the god Shiva, including the wedding of Shiva and the goddess Parvati, as well as the story of Shiva defeating the Langka Demon King
