From the Old Town of Lijiang to the north, along the main road on the east side of Zhongjihai, you can see a cluster of villages at the foot of the mountains on both sides. This is Shuhe Ancient Town, known as the hometown of springs. When Xu Xiake visited Zhishan Jiefang Forest in the past, he once walked this path and wrote in his account: "Crossing a dry stream stone bridge, looking west towards the middle sea, the willows are dark and the waves are rippling. There is a large settlement on top of it, which is called the Ten Harmony Courtyard. Shihe "is the ancient name of Shuhe Ancient Town today

Historical evolution

Shuhe, known as "Shaowu" in Naxi language. Shuhe Ancient Town, also known as Longquan Village, is named after the towering peaks of the Jubao Mountain behind the village. It has been passed down and evolved to mean "the village below the peak". In the late Spring and Autumn Period and Warring States Period, the Naxi ancestors migrated and settled here, making it one of the earliest settlements of the Naxi people in Lijiang Bazi. During the Song and Yuan dynasties, market towns had already formed. The "Yuan Yitong Zhi" refers to "Shuhe". In the Ming Dynasty, it was called "Shuhe Yuan". After the Qing Dynasty, it was called "Shuhe". Tea horse culture, agricultural culture, Naxi culture, and ecological culture are still preserved today

The "Ancient Tea Horse Road" opened in the Tang Dynasty directly reached Lhasa, Xizang, from southern Yunnan via Lijiang. From the Tang Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, it was an important channel for economic and cultural exchanges between the people of Yunnan and Tibet. Shuhe used to be an important post station on the "Ancient Tea Horse Road", an important well preserved market town on the "Ancient Tea Horse Road", a living specimen of the transition of the Naxi nationality from agricultural civilization to commercial civilization, and a model of market town construction formed by opening up to the outside world and horse gang activities@In May 2003, the government of Gucheng District initiated the protection and development project of Shuhe Tea Horse Ancient Town and the construction of a tourist characteristic town through investment promotion, with an investment of 560 million yuan. Develop projects such as "Courtyard Hotel", "Residential Inn", "Courtyard Store", "Catering Bar", "Handicraft Workshop", "Horse Riding Tourism", etc

Ancient Town

Shuhe Ancient Town is a sister chapter of the Old Town of Lijiang. The ancient town faces west and east, facing the sun from behind, overlooking the Jade Dragon to the north, Wenbi to the south, and Xiangshan to the east. Despite the vicissitudes of time, the ancient appearance remains unchanged, with villages and fields seamlessly integrated, and a beautiful ecology, forming a unique landscape of "ancient roads, springs, and homes". The mountains and forests behind the village are the southern extension of Yulong Mountain, with beautiful mountain shapes and dense vegetation. There is Fenghuang Mountain in Yanjiao Courtyard, Baisha Town, which is the birthplace of the Mu family in Lijiang. The shape of Shuhe Mountain changes again, showing auspicious signs. Kanyu scholars call it the "land of Danfeng holding books", predicting the prosperity and development of culture

The entire ancient town is located west of the three mountains of Jubao, Longquan, and Lianhua, with three rivers flowing in front of the street: Jiuding River, Qinglong River, and Shuhe River. The east-west axis of the ancient street starts from the Jiuding River Stone Plate Bridge at the foot of Jubao Mountain, passes through Qinglong Bridge, passes through the center of Sifang Street, and leads to the ancient city of Dayan. Taking Qinglong River as the north-south axis, the three rivers of Jiuding River, Qinglong River, and Shuhe, which flow out from Jiuding Longtan 300 meters north, pass through the streets and villages, giving Shuhe both the natural beauty of field scenery and the charm of a water town in Jiangnan. The entire ancient town advocates nature in style, relies on mountains and waters, pursues the affinity between people and mountains and waters, builds houses against the mountains, follows the direction of the mountains, and the houses are arranged in a staggered manner with rich layers. The clear springs in front of the village are gurgling, the canal at the end of the alley is gurgling, the stream in the courtyard flows, and the clear springs in front of the door flow. There is a bridge at the end of each alley, a bridge at each household's door, and small bridges and flowing houses everywhere. The Five Flower Stone Road leads to the Fourth Street of Wucun, with willows leaning against the riverbank and roses covering the embankment

Sifang Street is the heart of the entire ancient town, with a length of 50 meters from east to west and a width of 40 meters from north to south. Surrounded by numerous paved streets, "Sifang" has five streets leading in all directions, with water flowing around and bustling during the day. It is one of the oldest markets in Lijiang Bazi and the most well preserved ancient market town on the Tea Horse Ancient Road

Main attractions

Sifang Tingyin

The name "Sifang Tingyin" comes from the traditional "Sifang Street". Every year, various large-scale activities in Shuhe, such as Snow Mountain Music Festival, Qixi Festival, Model Contest, Naxi Ancient Music, Bonfire Party and various artistic performances, are held here, which is one of the most important venues in Shuhe Ancient Town. Sifang Tingyin "is the core area of the Shuhe Ancient Town Tea Horse Inn and the cultural center of the Shuhe Ancient Town scenic area. To the west is a stage showcasing the song and dance styles of various ethnic minorities along the Tea Horse Ancient Road

Qinglong Bridge

Qinglong Bridge is located on the west side of Old Sifang Street. It was built during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty and has a history of more than 400 years. To the west of Qinglong Bridge is Jubao Mountain, and the central axis of Qinglong Bridge faces Jubao Mountain. This is the design of the Mu family chieftain. It is also a landmark building during the heyday of the Mu Clan Tusi, with a length of 25 meters, a width of 4.5 meters, and a height of 4 meters, ranking as the tallest ancient stone bridge in Lijiang. The bridge deck of Qinglong Bridge has been washed away by hundreds of years of wind and rain, making it old and dilapidated, yet still retaining its heroic aura and solemn sense

Sifang Street

Shuhe Sifang Street is called "Shaowu Zhi" in Naxi language, which means "Shaowu's street market". It is said to have been established by the Mu clan chieftain during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, and gradually became one of the four major markets in Lijiang, often gathering farmers and merchants from all directions. The Sifang Street in Shuhe Ancient City is only a few meters long and wide, with four roads leading in all directions. Surrounded by water, it is a bustling market during the day and is one of the oldest markets in Lijiang Bazi. In ancient times, there was a night market on Sifang Street in Shuhe. People strolled freely on Sifang Street like urbanites today, stopping and walking as they pleased, exploring wonders, eating whatever they wanted, and participating in their favorite games. Night market visitors held torches and walked along the Qinglong River, like fireflies on summer nights, becoming a scenery called "Night Market Firefly", which is listed as one of the eight scenic spots in Shuhe

Jiuding Longtan

Jiuding Longtan, also known as "Longquan" by locals. The water of Jiuding Longtan comes from the crevices of the rocks at the foot of Longquan Mountain. The water in the pond is not deep, but it is not muddy in summer and not shallow in winter. A clear stream of water overflows from the crevices, forever nourishing the ancient town. Around the pond, green willows hang down from the ground, green cypress trees point to the sky, and the spring water is clear. There are many fish swimming in the pond, which are revered as divine fish by the locals. The fish in Longtan are sacred fish that cannot be eaten. According to the "Annals of Qianlong Lijiang Prefecture", "Jiuding Longtan is located ten miles west of the city. The water in the pond is clear, and there are countless fish swimming in it. It covers an area of ten acres, with beautiful rocks and deep forests. It is said that in the past, someone wanted to catch their fish, but thunder and hail suddenly struck, and no one dared to do so." According to folk legend, anyone who steals Longtan's sacred fish will suffer disaster. Thus, the divine fish is protected, reproduces itself, and leisurely lives in the spring water. This fish is commonly known as the "noodle fish" and is actually called the "plateau split belly fish". It has fine scales and a slender body, making it a rare fish species. In fact, the sudden thunderstorm is just a natural phenomenon. The meaning behind this story is to educate people to respect nature and cherish the ecology, which is the value of Naxi ecological culture

Sansheng Palace

Sansheng Palace is located at the foot of Longquan Mountain on Renli Road in Shuhe Ancient Town. According to Qianlong's "Brief History of Lijiang Prefecture", it was originally the Nine Ding Dragon King Temple. During the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1875-1908), the San Sheng Palace was rebuilt by local villagers, with a layout of a quadrangle courtyard facing west and east. The east and south buildings were built on the mountain, with a ground floor. The main hall was built on the mountain, and the western wall was a natural rock wall, which was magnificent. Inside, there were statues of Guanyin Bodhisattva, the master of leatherwork Sun Bin, and the Nine Cauldrons Dragon King. For hundreds of years, the San Sheng Palace has been an important place for the villagers of Shuhe and neighboring villagers to worship, pray for rain, and worship the master of leatherwork. The worshippers' incense has never been interrupted. The remaining branches of the Yulong Snow Mountain in Lijiang, although lined with temples, are mostly Tibetan temples, with few Han Chinese temples. The Shuhe Sansheng Palace and Longquan are both Han Chinese temples, which are particularly precious. They are backed by green mountains, facing blue ponds, with lush ancient trees, sky light and cloud shadows, and constantly changing scenery. They are the source of Shuhe Mountain's water and spiritual veins, as well as the gathering places for literati and scholars in urban and rural areas of Lijiang in the past. In 1986, Sansheng Palace was listed as a key cultural relic protection unit at the county level in Lijiang Naxi Autonomous Region

Tea Horse Museum

The Tea Horse Ancient Road Museum area is the most well preserved and largest ancient architectural complex in Shuhe Ancient Town, covering a total area of 5137.3 square meters within the red line. The Dajue Palace belongs to the Ming Dynasty architecture and was listed as the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units in 2013. The Shuhe Tea Horse Ancient Road Museum consists of the Dajue Palace, Yuantian Pavilion Site, Wenchang Palace Site, and the original Shuhe Elementary School Teaching Building built in the 1940s. It is a precious collection of Naxi ancient architecture. In 2004, several ancient and modern buildings were renovated into the "Shuhe Tea Horse Ancient Road Museum", which set up 13 local cultural exhibition halls and exhibited more than 800 cultural relics related to the Tea Horse Ancient Road, becoming the first private museum in China with the theme of Tea Horse culture. The Tea Horse Ancient Road Museum was opened to the public for free on May 1, 2004. The museum is equipped with 10 high-quality tour guides, who provide free explanations of Tea Horse culture, Naxi culture, and Shuhe cultural history to visitors all year round, playing a positive role in promoting Shuhe in Lijiang. The Dajue Palace, which was built during the Longqing period of the Ming Dynasty (around 1567), was an important part of the Mu clan chieftain Shuhe Yuan at that time. It faced north and south, and was characterized by a single eaved gable roof and a raised beam style building. The building area was 76.31 square meters (width: 8.25 meters, depth: 9.25 meters), with a floor height of 4.16 meters. The indoor area is 57.68 square meters (width: 7.62 meters, depth: 7.57 meters), and the building has been preserved for more than 400 years. The painted and carved parts in the corridor have slightly faded, and some doors and windows have been renovated. The main structure is well preserved. There are currently six murals preserved in the main hall of Dajue Palace, all of which use the expression techniques of Chinese and Tibetan murals, such as outlining, coloring, gold and powder stacking, black background painting, etc. From the overall effect of the picture, the shape is accurate, the depiction is delicate, the brushwork is varied, the lines are smooth, the composition is reasonable, balanced and coordinated, and the color setting is both clear and heavy, with a beautiful and solemn appearance. The murals on the west wall No. 1 and the east wall No. 6 are a joint painting of the two opposing walls titled 'Gods of the Heavenly Protectors', with each mural covering an area of 2.84 square meters (1.34 meters x 2.12 meters). Among them, the mural on the west wall No. 1 is slightly arched as a whole; The murals on the west wall No. 2 and east wall No. 5 are respectively the two opposite walls of "Manjushri Bodhisattva * Drawing" and "Samantabhadra Bodhisattva * Drawing", with each mural covering an area of 6.76 square meters (3.19 meters x 2.12 meters). The central area of the two murals has been damaged with obvious scratches, and the damaged part is relatively large; The murals at No. 3 on the west wall and No. 4 on the east wall are the two opposite murals, "The Eighteen Arhats". The area of each mural is 2.83 square meters (1.33 meters × 2.13 meters). Among them, the right area of the mural at No. 3 on the west wall is partially faded, and the damaged part is relatively large. The main characteristics of its murals are the integration of multiple religions, various painting styles, and the fusion of religious themes and local primitive scenery. It is a rare treasure in many wall paintings in China
