Basic Introduction of Shiping Green Sheep
Shiping Green Sheep is a local breed that has been naturally selected and domesticated for a long time, and is characterized by a green coat on its body. The sheep has a history of over 250 years of breeding, and due to its gentle temperament, the locals call it the 'silly sheep'. In the 2006 survey of livestock and poultry breed resources in our province, the Shiping Green Sheep was named based on its place of origin and appearance characteristics. After multiple expert groups organized by the province and state to conduct detailed investigations in Shiping County, it was identified as a rare breeding stock resource unique to Yunnan Province. The Shiping Blue Sheep belongs to the currently reported local sheep breeds in China with beautiful fur color and moderate body shape. Based on the appearance characteristics of green fur color and the detection of "fur chemical composition", it is estimated that the population contains the gene for green fur color. This sheep has the advantages of flexible movement, good climbing skills, cold resistance, coarse feeding tolerance, strong adaptability, strong disease resistance, and low feeding costs. Although it belongs to the original ecological sheep breed that has not been selected, it has a high slaughter rate, net meat yield, thin skin, bright red meat color, delicate meat texture, no gamey smell, delicious taste, and rich nutrition. It has good application and economic development prospects in production. But there is no evidence to determine where the Shiping Blue Sheep came from or how it evolved into its current breed. According to the Mao section of the "Shipingzhou Chronicle (Volume 3)" in the 24th year of the Qianlong reign (1759), "horses, cows, sheep..." are estimated to have a breeding history of more than 250 years. According to local Yi elders, this sheep has been raised for generations. Due to the fact that the main production area is a high-altitude mountainous area where the Yi ethnic group gathers, transportation is inconvenient. Generally, Yi people have to slaughter sheep for weddings, funerals, and various important activities. Women like to use green sheepskin as a cushion and felt to keep warm, rain proof, and moisture-proof. Due to the influence of the production, lifestyle, customs, and natural environment conditions of the local Yi ethnic group, the unique local breed of Shiping Blue Sheep, which has a relatively consistent body shape and appearance, has been formed through long-term natural selection and domestication. The protection of Shiping green sheep has received high attention from various levels of departments. In 2009, it was listed as a protected variety of livestock and poultry genetic resources in Yunnan Province, and in 2010, it was listed as a protected variety of national livestock and poultry genetic resources. The Shiping County Livestock Technology Promotion Station participated in the implementation of the "Red River Prefecture Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources Investigation and Protection Project", in which the Shiping Blue Sheep Source won the first prize in Yunnan Province's agricultural technology promotion in 2009. The "Investigation and Protection Project of Shiping Blue Sheep Genetic Resources" won the third prize for scientific and technological progress in Honghe Prefecture in 2010. In 2011, a green sheep breeding farm was established in Tuolonghei Village, Shuiguachong Village Committee, Shaochong Town. The protection of green sheep in Shiping will be further strengthened
The Shiping Green Sheep is distributed in Longwu Town, Shaochong Town, and Longpeng Town of Shiping County, Yunnan Province. It is a local sheep genetic resource that can be used for both meat and wool. It has been included in the Yunnan Province Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources Protection Catalogue and the China Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources Catalogue
