Introduction to Qingjiang Meat Sheep
Changyang is a major county for goat production, with 630000 acres of grassland resources and unique natural conditions for goat production. It is the central production area for high-quality Yichang white goats.
. High, medium, and low mountains are distributed in all 16 townships of the county, and it was once the strongest county for sheep farming in the province. In 1996, the "Changyang Commodity Sheep Production Base in Qingjiang River Basin" project began to be implemented, and the goat production in the county achieved rapid development. In 1999, the total number of goats raised in the county reached more than 250000, and more than 160000 commodity sheep were sold, once again ranking among the top in the province
The Changyang goat breed is mainly composed of Yichang white goats. After long-term artificial and natural breeding, this breed has formed a dual-purpose breed with delicate and compact physique, strong limbs, solid hooves, agile movements, good skin quality, and stable genetic properties. But there are also fatal weaknesses, such as small size, slow growth rate, and low economic benefits. After the implementation of the "Qingjiang Meat Sheep Base" project, the county's animal husbandry department introduced excellent domestic and foreign goat breeds such as Saanen goat, Nanjiang yellow goat, and Boer goat to crossbreed and improve the economic performance of Yichang white goats, achieving good results. Especially, the crossbreeding and improvement effect of Boer goat was the most significant. The average weight of the six month old F1 generation of Boluyi was 22.5 kilograms, which increased by 78% compared to the same age Yichang white goats. Some hybrid sheep could reach a weight of 27.5 kilograms at three months old. Boer goats are native to South Africa and are currently recognized as the best breed of meat goats in the world. The offspring of crossbreeding with local goats have excellent properties such as large size, rapid growth, strong physique, good meat quality, wide adaptability, and strong disease resistance, while maintaining the good quality of local goat skins. Adult male sheep can weigh over 100 kilograms and have been accepted by farmers throughout the county. At present, there are hybrid offspring of Boer goats distributed in all 16 townships of the county, which has become the mainstream variety of goat production in our county. In 1998, the County Livestock Bureau introduced Boer goats from New Zealand to establish a pure breeding group and carried out extensive crossbreeding and improvement of local goats. In order to fully utilize sheep breeding and accelerate the pace of improvement, the animal husbandry technology department has also successfully experimented with the application of goat fresh semen high dilution artificial insemination technology, which has achieved success. After expert appraisal, it has reached the leading level in China and has been awarded the Yichang Science and Technology Innovation Award
The county has initially formed a goat breeding system, disease prevention and control system, and product circulation system. There are direct sales windows for sheep in Guangzhou, Wenzhou, and other places, and a series of sheep products have been processed, basically forming an industrialized management pattern of production, supply, processing, and sales
