It is also raised in nearby towns such as Shuanghe, Changgang, Huantan, and Sanligang. Hongshan chicken enjoys a high reputation in the Hong Kong and Macau markets
Hongshan chickens were not widely distributed and their numbers were not large in the past. In 1968, with the support of the provincial foreign trade department, a Hongshan chicken farm was established in Hongshan, Suixian County for breeding. At the same time, a production team was developed to run a collective chicken farm to raise Hongshan chickens, and measures were taken to offer high quality and good prices, as well as to reward sales. The public came to the farm to exchange eggs for hatching or purchase chicks, in order to promote the development of Hongshan chickens and promote the production of persimmon milk. From 1968 to 1981, a total of 136000 Hongshan chickens were fattened and exported locally, increasing their income by more than 400000 yuan and exchanging foreign exchange for 200000 US dollars. In 1973, there were around 150000 Hongshan chickens raised in the Hongshan District alone. Subsequently, due to issues such as acquisition price, technology, and funding, the breeding quantity decreased. According to a survey conducted in 1981, a total of 45000 Hongshan chickens were raised in Suixian Hongshan, accounting for about 50% of the total number of chickens raised in the area; Nearly 20000 Hongshan chickens are raised in Qingtan, Zaoyang County, accounting for about 40% of the local chicken population. In 2001, there were 100000 chickens stored in the Hongshan chicken production area, of which 81000 yuan were stored in Suizhou City, accounting for 26.8% of the local chicken storage
