& nbsp;& nbsp; The Melk Monastery was established in 1089. The breathtaking Baroque architecture of today was built between 1702 and 1736, featuring exquisite murals, and the library houses countless medieval manuscripts. Due to its reputation and academic value, the Melk Abbey was spared from the destruction of the Napoleonic Wars when Joseph II extensively dissolved monasteries in Austria from 1780 to 1790. In 1938, the merger of Germany and Austria resulted in the nationalization of most of the schools and monasteries by the Nazis
