Basic introduction of Xinjiang brown cattle
Xinjiang brown cattle belong to the dual-purpose breed of dairy and meat, mainly produced in Yili and Tacheng areas of Xinjiang. As early as 1935-1936, the Ili and Tacheng regions used Swiss brown cattle to crossbreed with local Kazakh cattle. Between 1951 and 1956, several batches of Alatau cattle with Swiss brown cattle lineage and a small amount of Kostrom cattle were introduced from the former Soviet Union for further improvement. In 1977 and 1980, three batches of Swiss brown cattle were introduced from the former West Germany and Austria, which played an important role in further improving and consolidating the quality of Xinjiang brown cattle. After half a century of breeding, it was identified and approved as a new variety for both dairy and meat in 1983. Currently, there are over 450000 cattle of this breed
Xinjiang brown cattle have horns, with slightly straight tips that are dark brown in color. The horns are of moderate size and curved in a semi elliptical shape towards the front and upper sides. The fur is brown in color, with varying shades. The top, base of the horns, around the mouth wheel, and the back line are gray white or yellow white. The eyelids, nose, tail tip, and hooves are dark brown. The body is strong, the head is delicate, the horns are of medium size, curved towards the side, front, and upper, forming a semi elliptical shape. The coat is of varying shades of brown, with gray white or yellow white around the forehead, horn base, oral chakra, and dorsal line. The eyelids, nose, tail broom, and hooves are dark brown. Adult bulls weigh 951 kilograms, while cows weigh 431 kilograms. Calves have a birth weight of 28-30 kilograms
