How did the history of Xincheng honeysuckle come about
According to Xincheng County Annals, in 1368 (the first year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty), a merchant surnamed He from Chaozhou, Guangdong, entered the Hongshui River by boat from the the Pearl River and went up the river to the Lanjia Wharf in Xincheng County. After staying for several days, he saw that Lanjia was on the south bank of the Hongshui River, with mountains on both sides. The ancient trees on the mountains towered above the sky, and felt that this place was a treasure land. The following year, he transported green bricks, lime, and other materials from Guangdong by boat, and built a two-story shop at the foot of the Lanshan Mountain in Lanjia to purchase local specialties such as soybeans, black beans, mung beans, and Chinese herbal medicines. Every year, he also shipped salt and light industrial products from Guangdong to the Lanjia shop to exchange with local farmers for agricultural products, and transported them back to Guangdong for sale by light waterway. As a result, Lanjia became a trading center for agricultural products and Chinese herbal medicines in the Shishan area, including Liudie, Liuna, Jiahai, Jialong, Qionggu, Suiyi, and Jinchai. One day in mid April 1373, the merchant went up the mountain to enjoy the scenery and saw the blooming honeysuckle on the mountain. He smelled its fragrance and asked the locals why they didn't recycle and process traditional Chinese medicine. The locals said that the southern region had entered the rainy season, with more rainy days and fewer sunny days, and the recovered flowers were difficult to sun dry into dried medicinal herbs. The following year, this merchant brought sulfur from Guangdong and guided the locals to steam the recovered honeysuckle with sulfur. The honeysuckle was exposed to sunlight and could be left indoors to cool off on rainy days without any problem. Using sulfur fumigation could also maintain the color of the flowers. Since then, people have been using sulfur fumigation as a processing technique
