How did the history of Dengbu Golden Melon come about
Dengbu Golden Melon originally had various names, some were called "Oriental Little Melon", some were called "Oriental Little Golden Melon", and some said its melon was small like a Japanese person, so it was called Oriental Little Golden Melon. Not entirely correct. But this melon has some connection with the Japanese, and the most accurate one should be called "Dengyang Golden Melon" or "Buddha Melon". Around 748 AD, Master Jianzhen led his disciples on their fifth eastward voyage carrying scriptures, medicinal herbs, and crop seeds (one of which was a bag of golden melon seeds), but they were unsuccessful. On their sixth voyage, they set sail again from Xinhe Town, Yangzhou. However, after the ship stopped at Lianhua Ocean, it encountered strong winds and was blown into two small islands in the East China Sea, one of which is now known as Dengbu Island (formerly composed of two islands, east and west). Strangely enough, as soon as the master's ship landed on this small island, the wind was calm and the sun was shining brightly. Due to the large waves splashing on the contents of the cabin, which were all Chinese treasures he had selected and prepared to send to Japan, the master immediately ordered someone to take the items out of the deck and dry them. After drying, he went into the cabin to rest. After taking a break for about an hour, someone came out and saw that everything was complete except for a bag of golden sunflower seeds that had disappeared without a trace. As a result, I told the master about this package of seeds. The master was dumbfounded when he came out, and he felt very sad about this matter. Because this package of seeds is the best seed he selected, unfortunately it cannot be sent to Japan Earlier, a monk from Mount Putuo purchased this melon to worship Bodhisattva, hence it is called the "Buddha Melon"
